This is an intensive workshop; over the course of a week we will complete five books, developing (or honing) basic bookbinding skills along the way. This class is a great introduction to bookbinding, and a prerequisite for many other great bookbinding courses at the Center. The book is housed in a secret Belgian binding, with the boards covered in Belgian flax paper.

In a secret Belgian binding the cover is made by weaving thread over and under discrete spine and cover pieces to join them into a single unit, and then the text block is sewn to the cover. A feature of the secret Belgian binding is that you can open the front cover all the way around to the back (or the back all the way around to the front); it works like a magic wallet.

back to school

I'm teaching a section of Bookbinding I at The Center for Book Arts next week (Oct 5-9) and there are some slots available. I was a Sanford Expresso devotee for years until they became increasingly hard to find. Then there was a transitional period where I didn't have a steady pen, and my husband Dan stuffed my stocking with replacement candidates at Christmastime. The Le Pen marker was a winner, and has been my pen ever since.

Now the stationery shop in the neighborhood doesn't seem to have them in brown anymore so I stocked up online. I was tickled to receive the boxes along with the pens. I was reminded of Charles Schulz who, upon hearing his favorite pen was going to be discontinued, bought an entire drawer's worth so he could continue to draw Charlie Brown and company for the rest of his days.

Ever have a project take on a life of its own?

books at work

Books that I made that I use.. some of my sketchbooks/project books and journals.
